BM: Thank you for being the first to enter Bullseye Million.
Bobby: My pleasure!
BM: When you first heard about Bullseye Million, what did you think?
Bobby: I thought it was a wind-up to be honest! A million dollars just for going for the Bullseye. It's a lotta dough!
The great thing is, it could really make someone, hopefully someone who's out of work, without a pot to p*** in.
Obviously, with the pressure of throwing one dart for a million, it's gonna be very exciting.
BM: How will the darts pros do?
Bobby: One dart makes it a real good leveller. I'm not sure all the darts pros will make it to the final rounds. There should be a good mix in the closing stages.
It's massive money for a one day event, so I think it will attract players of all levels. Don't forget, it's a bit of fun and a day out for the darts pros too!
There's certainly room for embarrassment though. Imagine, Phil Taylor, goes up there, first game and gets beaten by a lesser player. One dart is a real leveller.
Anyone who doesn't take part, when they see the winner, they'll think "F*** me! I could have won that!"
But you've got to be in it to win it. It's who dares wins, not who cares who wins!
BM: Will it require skill and nerve?
Bobby: Well, I always say with darts, don't matter what game you're playing, it's 50% ability, 25% who you draw, 25% luck.
If you've got two good players, it's a toss of a coin. Get a good and a bad player, the good player has more chance of winning obviously. However, with Bullseye Million, one dart cuts the odds down because you haven't got the rhythm.
BM: What do you mean by 'rhythm'?
Bobby: Normally, your first dart is a guide. With your second you aim better. And your third you gotta get. That's why you see a lot of tons... ton, ton, ton.
So when you're throwing three darts, you can get a 'rhythm'. But with one dart cold, any player, no matter what ability, their first throw can be outside the 25.
BM: Any tips?
Bobby: Look where you're throwing then throw where you're looking. That's what I say darts is – if only it was that easy!!
Bullseye Million is simple. You don't have to count, so you won't get distracted by numbers.
You could be a novice, never thrown a dart in your life, and go up there and hit a 25 or a bull. So it's got that lovely element of surprise and luck in it
BM: Why is the Bullseye so special?
Bobby: Well, it originated from the archery, didn't it. You had the rings, and gold was the middle one. And what made England great was the Longbowmen of England. The Longbowmen made our army with their skill and their accuracy.
In the 15th Century, armies would have a row, and then they'd sit down for a fortnight. So in between the battles, they'd throw broken arrows at wooden targets. And that's where the game originated. It then moved into Inns, and became a pub game.
BM: Is hitting the Bullseye the most satisfying shot?
Bobby: It's the hardest thing to do on a dartboard, without a doubt. It's the smallest target on the board, but it's not the highest score. That's the weird thing. Hitting the Bullseye looks and feels lovely!
BM: What's your advice for hitting the Bullseye?
Bobby: Just relax, don't do anything different. Perhaps if you're tall, you'll pull your dart down. If you're short, you'll push it up a bit.
BM: Should the dart be released at the same point as your normal throw?
Bobby: We'll I've never really studied that. I just look at it, throw it, and f****** hope it goes in! Wonderful when it does.
BM: Who do you think will win Bullseye Million?
Bobby: A board has got 20 segments, with doubles, singles and trebles. And the darts pro who plays 501 regular has got to be good at every target.
Difference is, with Bullseye Million, there's only one area to worry about. So I think it's wide open and keeping your nerve will be the most important thing to win it. Every round is a final.
May the darts be with you and the Bullseyes of course!
